Home / fundraise

Bookmaking is a great class or school project that has the potential for an original fundraising campaign.

The ideal book fundraiser is a compilation of collaborative stories from each class.
This method involves each student in the creation process, creates class comradery and school spirit, and the final product is something that the entire school can be proud of.
Collaboration brings out the individual talents of each class member, creates a social and supportive environment, and produces an exceptional final piece that every member can be proud of.
Collaboration

  • induces instantaneous feedback.
  • initiates proactive and interactive learning
  • can alter students thoughts on subject matter and give them an ability to alter their perceptions
  • develops a “safe” environment where their ideas are valid and encouraged
  • levels the field with authority figures
  • encourages individuals to use and strengthen their individual talents
  • books will sell better if every student is involved in the production

The collaborative storymaking process
1) Brainstorming & Outlining
2) Writing & Drafting
3) Rereading
4) Revising & Editing
5) Publishing

Example:
Students brainstorm to select the subject for the book and a title.
The class can then developed a plot, an outline, and character sketches.
Class is divided into groups. Each group can be responsible for writing one or more sections, and creating illustrations.
The class can then compile their work for display and critique.
Groups can regroup and work on their revisions.
Class compiles their work for display and final critique.
The book is ready for publishing.

Things to remember:

  • Maintain consistency throughout your story. Illustrations should be similar in style. Writing “voice” should be indistinguishable from page to page.
  • Write for your audience. Create something that your students would enjoy reading, chances are other children would enjoy it as well.
  • Consider creating a series, or developing a character that would appeal to your audience in a series of stories.
  • If it sounds good use it.
  • Worry less about grammar, sentence structure and more about how your characters speak and the flow of the story.
  • Find the realism within your story. No matter how unbelievable if there is something that is real (the weather, the days of the week, an individual) the story will be far more believable.

Tips to successful fundraising

Promote your book. Even while students are writing it, the excitement of students in the creative process will shift onto their family and friends.

Enlist help from older students or parent volunteers. Typing, scanning, photographing, assembling, editing.

Keep your sales team excited about selling with assemblies, posters, and announcements.

Have a “book launch” invite parents and the community to the event. Decorate with the original artwork. Why not host an art auction for pure profit. Have forms and volunteers ready to take any book orders.

Advertise throughout your community, ask to put up posters in local businesses, or hand out flyers in busy community areas.

Enlist parent and student volunteers as organizers and salespersons.

Send emails with a quick note about what your organization is doing be sure to include a link to your book

Never let students sell door to door. Have them list out all their family members, friends and neighbours that they can safely sell to.
